The Rich Heritage of Kashmiri Carpets
Hand-knotted carpets have long been associated with Kashmir. Each piece begins as a design drawn on paper, often called a talim, which tells the weaver which colour to knot at every point.
How a carpet is made
Weavers tie individual knots of wool or silk around the warp threads of a loom, row after row. A finer carpet has more knots in every square inch, which is why detailed pieces can take many months to complete.
What to look for
- Even knotting and straight edges
- Colours that stay consistent across the pile
- A back that shows a clear, sharp pattern
When you choose a carpet, ask about its materials, size and knot density so you can compare pieces fairly.
