Heritage of Kashmir

Exploring the Art of Kashmiri Handicrafts

An artisan at work on a handcrafted piece

Kashmir is known for a wide range of handcrafts, each with its own tools, patterns and patience.

Papier-mâché

Layers of paper pulp are shaped, dried and then painted by hand with fine floral and leaf motifs, often finished with a glossy lacquer.

Walnut wood carving

Carvers cut deep, detailed patterns into walnut, creating trays, screens and boxes where every curve is made by hand.

Embroidery

Needlework such as aari and sozni adds delicate stitched designs to shawls, kurtas and home pieces.

Each craft rewards a closer look. Take your time with the details.
